Ensombrecidos por el enorme calado de sus novelas, los tres cuentos que se reúnen en este volumen son, sin embargo, tres piezas sobresalientes características del Dostoyevski más maduro. Aunque en cada uno de ellos predomine un registro distinto –metafórico en “El sueño de un hombre ridículo”, satírico en “Bobok”, trágico en “La sumisa”–, todos giran en torno a dos de las preocupaciones mayores del autor, a saber: por un lado, la insensibilidad de la que el hombre es víctima a causa de su enajenación respecto a sus raíces, y por otro el sentido de su andadura sobre la tierra.
